Newbridge Food Co-op or Newbridge OOOOBY is the 2nd OOOOBY group in Ireland, the first one starting in Wicklow in association with Carraig Dulra.

Standing for ‘Out of Our Own Back Yard’ the OOOOBY group is based on the Food Co-op ideals of sourcing local producers and suppliers of local, tasty, affordable and if possible, organic food.

NOOOOBY also encourages members to bring their own produce, and most of our goods are now coming from members of the co-op. NOOOOBY is a not for profit, voluntary group, run by a group of interested locals, who feel strongly about where their food comes from.

Proposed...Newbridge Food Co-op's Christmas Fair

Hi all,
We haven't got it together to have a Christmas Fair like we did last year, but we thought we might have a smaller modified affair on one of our shop nights, so....

We are proposing to have the Newbridge Food Co-op's Christmas Fair on Wed 12th December 2012 in the Lifeflow Centre, Newbridge (pending permission from the owners) time tbc, to link in with 'shop' night.

Are there any crafters/makers/stallholders from last year that would be interested in a more informal fair this year? It would be small scale, maybe between the kitchen and the room beside it in the Lifeflow, so you'd have to set up on a small table, and be prepared for smaller space etc. This is a preliminary enquiry/info gathering email, if people are interested in doing it, it will go ahead, if there aren't it won't!!! If you know if anyone who might be interested in having a tiny stall, then pass on our email.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

the NOOOOBY gang

The Fruit Press in action again...Grape Pressing

Grape Pressing!

During the mid-term I put the community fruit press into action over in my dad's place in Maynooth, and with the help of my 3 & 6 year old cousins we sorted and de-stalked hundreds of grapes and put them through the press!

We are hoping to make some delicious red wine from the grape juice, it's our first experiment with actual grape-wine making, my apple wine, made from apples from our very first inaugural fruit pressing is now the most delicious apple wine you have ever tasted, so this is wine making experiment no. 2!

Local Producer Profile - Camphill @ Grangebeg

In case you were wondering where our beautiful organic eggs at NOOOOBY were coming from, here's where!

In season we have also been getting some of our organic vegetables from Grangebeg for our totally organic vegetable boxes. In early summer we had the largest early potatoes I have ever seen!

Check out Grangebeg's farm here: http://www.camphill.ie/grangebeg-Farming-s-91.html

Camphill Community Grangebeg is located in County Kildare on the border with County Wicklow. They are a small farm based community responsible for the care and management of our 46 acres of land, on which we run a small herd of cattle, sheep and a few hundrend chickens. They are organically certified and their vegetable garden provides enough food to sustain them through most of the year with a surplus to sell to local communities and fellow organic growers.

Producer Profile: Moyleabbey Organic Farm

Moyle Abbey are one of our two organic vegetable suppliers for our organic vegetable box scheme which we run as part of our NOOOOBY group. beautiful veg, grown in our home county, you can't get much more l0cal than that. And with the hungry gap coming to an end, the veg boxes should be really tasty over the next few months.

http://www.moyleabbey.ie/

We are a family run organic vegetable and fruit farm managed by Liam Ryan and Yuki Kobayashi. We started converting the 13.5 acre farm to certified organic production in August 2003 and achieved full organic status in August 2006.
The land is based in the townsland of Moyleabbey, nearby to the historic Quaker village of Ballitore in County Kildare. It lies halfway between Naas and Carlow just off the N9. It is ideal land for organic vegetable production, it has a gentle slope and is naturally very fertile having been in grassland for over 15 years. The soil is a deep sandy loam, which is good to work in many different weather conditions. It is very well suited to a wide range of vegetable crops as well as such fruits as strawberries, which we have planted this year and apple trees, which we are planted this winter.

NOOOOBY Orders Night-WED 27TH JUNE

Dear NOOOBYers,

A few changes are being instigated this month, as we are finding that by allowing late orders we haven't enough time to get the orders together fully and for them to be complete. We are also running into cash flow problems with goods not being paid for in advance. So in lieu of all that the changes are as follows.

ALL orders must be in by Wed 27th June, that's including people who come down in person to pay by cash at the NOOOOBY meeting (8pm, The Lifeflow Centre, Newbridge) AND people who order and pay online via the credit union account (info on how to set this up, attached). This means we then have 2 weeks to get the order together and especially make sure we can get all the local food orders in properly, as these take time between chatting with producers, arranging pick up/drop off etc. for pick up on the 2nd WEDNESDAY in JULY - that's goods pick up/shop night - WED 11TH JULY.

There were no veg boxes this month as the growers are having the hungry gap period extended due to bad weather, no one had veg ready for harvest yet, but they all say they should be good to go next month, so the veg boxes will be back into full swing for July's order(that's this one!).

Again if anyone has some free time we always appreciate some help on shop night - the next one being WEDNESDAY 11th July - we are all volunteers doing this for the love of food!

To conclude - NO orders will be accepted after WED 27th JUNE. new rule folks!

Happy rain!

Local Producer Profile: Kilbeggan Organic Oats

NOOOOBY have only recently discovered Kilbeggan Organic Porridge Oats in the last few months, and since then we haven't looked back. Delicious creamy oatflakes, have made me fall in love with porridge on a winters morning all over again!

About:
Kilbeggan Organic Foods was established in January 2011. This is a family business run by the Tom Lalor and his family to produce and market Organic food products based on the organic oat crop grown on the family farm, Ballard Organic Farm in Westmeath.

The Products:
Porridge oats comes in two distinct types, porridge oatlets also called fine or creamy porridge and jumbo oats. Both products are exactly the same as they both come from the oat grain, but the jumbo is the whole oat and the oatlet is the jumbo oat cut up into three or four pieces.

Both types of oats come in four different sizes; 500gr, 1kg, 3kg and 25kg.

If you visit Ballard Organic Farm web site on www.ballardorganicfarm.ie you will see how crop is grown and the care that is given to creating a soil that is full of the life that nature intended.

Health Benefits:
Eat more oats is a web site which explains the health benefits of eating oats. You may also down load a PDF which gives a copy of a current certificate of analysis of Kilbeggan Organic Porridge. It is interesting to compare the results with other brands and especially the very high level of soluble fibre contained in Kilbeggan Organic Porridge.

Welcome to Newbridge OOOOBY, Newbridge's Local Food co-op.

Founded in November 2010. Newbridge OOOOBY is a local Food co-op, standing for ‘Out of Our Own Back Yard’ the OOOOBY group is based on the Food Co-op ideals of sourcing local producers and suppliers of local, tasty, affordable and if possible, organic food. NOOOOBY is a not for profit, voluntary group, run by a group of interested locals, who feel strongly about where their food comes from.
At the moment, we’re sourcing our whole food locally, prioritising Irish and organic produce, so we’ve been enjoying tasty delights such as coffee roasted in Cork, and homemade Irish chocolate. We also get local Kildare honey, Kildare raised organic chickens, and Kildare apple juice and organic cheese from Carlow, all supplied by members. Since June 2011, we have been trialling a local organic vegetable box scheme, and feedback has been glowingly positive!
If you’re interested in getting involved in the NOOOOBY group, and buying your food locally, you can contact us via email at newbridgeooooby@gmail.com or phone our chairman Mairtín Lane on 087 4169582.

The first meeting is for placing your order and the second meeting is for collection of goods.
